The Twilight Sad have unveiled the video for ‘Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave’ from their recent acoustic session, Òran Mór. The track, like many from their fourth studio album of the same name, has been given the unplugged treatment, and it sounds magnificent. Gentle, stripped back and brushy, the song pays homage to The Twilight Sad’s ability to write gorgeous melodies and sombre music.
And that’s just what they want. In a recent interview with Fortitude, frontman James Graham discussed the band’s intent from the Òran Mór Session LP was to showcase the themselves as songwriters:
“We’ve been performing the songs off the new record and songs off of previous albums as well, and we’ve been doing a lot more acoustic sessions and gigs, things like that. And we’ve done a kind of stripped back session when we were a three-piece. We had an organ, drum machine and Andy playing guitar… I think we just kind of wanted to record something and document if and to show people a different side of the band, and show that we’re not the sort of band who only go out there and play big live loud noises. We wanted to showcase ourselves as songwriters as well.”
As such, The Twilight Sad share their Òran Mór version of ‘Nobody Wants To Be Here and Nobody Wants To Leave’ for the first time. The album was recorded in the Òran Mór auditorium, a popular arts and entertainment spot in the west of Glasgow. The set was initially released – in abridged form as an EP – to coincide with the band’s late 2014 and early 2015 tour dates. While the skeleton of the band’s loud, post-punk sound is still apparent, the tracks are stripped back to their core, and reveal the band’s intimate sound like never before.
The sessions act as something of a means to recap and reflect on what’s been a whirlwind past year for the band, with Nobody Wants To Be Here and Nobody Wants To Leave earning rave reviews from publications including The Sunday Times, Q, CMJ, The Quietus, Paste and Stereogum. The album topped Drowned in Sound’s best albums of 2014 and earning a rare perfect ten from the site and ranked third in Popmatters’ indie rock albums of the year.
