Sir Alex Ferguson Retires

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed rumours that he has retired as Manchester United manager.

His retirement was confirmed after a twelve hour media frenzy regarding claims that Ferguson had told his players yesterday in a team event that he would be announcing his departure from the game.

The decision completed a dramatic U-turn taken by Ferguson who seems to have had a complete change of heart since announcing in his program notes for last weekend’s clash with Chelsea that he was looking forward to United’s next decade of success.

Sir Alex has been in charge at Manchester United for over 26 years and has guided his side to a number of trophy wins since his arrival at the club in 1986 including United’s most recent record-breaking triumph in securing a 20th top-flight English league title.

The list of other honours the Scot secured at United stretches too long to list in this article and the biggest question on everyone’s mind right now is who could possibly replace him and inevitably the first name thrown into the equation was Real Madrid manager, José Mourinho.

Mourinho has long been considered as one of the only men with a big enough presence to replace the exiting Ferguson effectively but a name also in the fray is someone a bit closer to Manchester; Everton manager, David Moyes. The Toffees boss who has taken his team back to a top-six finish this season has been linked with the United assistant manager job over the last week in the wake of some health concerns regarding Sir Alex but surely now with Ferguson departing Moyes’ name will be amongst the candidates for the managers position.

All that remains for Ferguson now is to see United through the remaining two games of the season before having hip surgery and embarking on his well-deserved retirement.

I wouldn’t like to have to be the man to fill Fergie’s boots, someone has to do it though and to them I say good luck. Good luck living up to the standards of one of the greatest managers of all time.
