Single Review: FYA FOX – Sunset

FYA FOX is Ireland’s newest alt-pop queen and is hotly tipped for big things. Today she releases her third single, the ethereal Sunset

Sunset opens with muted synths that sweep in like a gentle, building breeze. FYA FOX’s vocal is angelic and as delicate as the understated accompaniment. The manipulated electronic beats and flourishes add an extra layer which presents an alt edge to FYA FOX’s ethereal vocal. The drum pad beat kicks in in a sudden rush, bringing an almost rocky dimension to the track. The chorus of “Beneath the sunset, beneath the sunset, the sunset is where I find you” is sung like a mantra and further emphasised by the echo of the backing vocals. The urgency in the chorus suggests a race to meet under the sunset to await what comes next.

When speaking of Sunset, FYA FOX said, “This song is really about this idea/belief of meeting again in an afterlife. The sunset is kind of that space between this life and the next.”

FYA FOX is a classically trained vocalist and notes Banks, Lana Del Rey and London Grammar as influences. The inspiration from these artists can be felt through FOX’s confessional lyrics and stripped back production. The anthemic Sunset is surely going to set her up as one to watch in the alternative pop scene.

FYA FOX’s 2020 debut single White Lies received radio airplay across the UK and Ireland plus an exclusive from Radio One’s Gemma Bradley on BBC Across The Line. The track also received praise from Irish titles Nialler9 and The Last Mixed Tape. Follow-up single Body was added to the BBC Radio Ulster Where Music Matters playlist and her music has featured on a number of Spotify playlists including Fresh Finds which boasts 750k followers.

Sunset is available to download and stream now. Find out more about FYA FOX here and have a listen to Sunset below.
