Single Review: DD Darillo ‘Loose Lips, Sink Ships’

DD Darillo make a welcome return in 2021 with the rasping new single Loose Lips, Sink Ships.

Following the release of the memorable debut single, and Fortitude Magazine favourite, ‘Time Will Tell’, Loose Lips, Sink Ships finds the Welsh band in fine fettle once more. A psych rock banger, Loose Lips, Sink Ships thrusts your ears forward in perpetual motion as the track kicks in with upbeat keys and crunching guitars. The melodic notes add a freshness to the psych genre, as Dylan Morgan’s vocals give an extra layer of warmth, neatly topped of with call and response harmonies and a beat that makes you crave a late night indie dance floor to fill.

DD Darillo’s flair for killer hooks and unforgettable melodies is second to none and, combined with their retro, new wave soundscapes, sees them fitting inexplicably somewhere between the likes of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and Squeeze.

Despite the buoyant nature of the music, the phrase ‘Loose Lips, Sink Ships’ is actually based on an old saying that originated as WW2 propaganda, meaning ‘beware of unguarded speak’. DD Darillo offer an acerbic take on the notion that we’ve all affected and been effected by speaking freely, creating circumstances that veer out of our control. This is all the more pertinent in today’s current affairs with fake news being utilised as a form of modern propaganda.

As well as Boy Azooga‘s Dylan Morgan, DD Darillo are made up of Oliver Beard (Bass, Backing Vocals) John Close (Guitar) and Alex Burch (Drums). Their debut single ‘Time Will Tell’ picked up support from the likes of Huw Stephens BBC Introducing show, Adam Walton on BBC Radio Wales, God Is In The TV, Buzz Mag, The Revue and many more. The track is accompanied by a b-side remix by Hot Chip live member Rob Smoughton, with a video by Craig Shankland (Estrons/Death Cult Electric) to follow.

Loose Lips, Sink Ships is out now.
