On Monday (March 21), Sainsbury’s will resume selling vinyl records for the first time since the 1980s. The supermarket chain will sell limited LPs to the public, including records by Nirvana, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, The Eagles, and Adele. Vinyl records will be available in 171 stores in the UK. Tesco became the first supermarket to re-stock LPs in their stores last year.
Sainsbury’s music buyer Sean Cowland has explained the company’s decision to jump on the vinyl revival bandwagon (Via: NME):
“The diverse nature of CD sales at Sainsbury’s – from bestselling chart lines to more specialist catalogue – has given us the confidence that our customers not only choose us as a destination for New Release albums but are also open to recommendation and discovery in store. The vinyl offer reflects this.”
