Review: The Tricks – Sebright Arms, London – 22/11/2012

The Tricks are a quartet that seem to be holding a heavy buzz within London for their indie-driven music and unforgettable choruses.

Maybe we should categorise them as underground, because it’s apparent that you can speak their name and a minimal amount of people will know their name or what you’re even talking about – quite an interesting observation to do, whilst they continue to sell out these intimate performances within the flutter of a heartbeat.

All this became clear, when we grace Sebright Arms to watch their performance. A venue that couldn’t suit their persona better. An underground venue built on mystery and powerful sounds.

The band came out guns blazing for their set; harmonies tight, hooks ever-present and lyrics that couldn’t help but inspire you to sing-a-long like a teenager at a One Direction concert, without all the screaming. However, this isn’t a One Direction and consisted of a strong bunch of mature adults occupying the dance floor with their overly energetic “skanking” and strutting; the right kind of audience you want to see.

We were once told (but, can’t remember who said it) that, “you know you’ve made a good track, if you can get your mum dancing”. Does that mean that The Tricks have produced a solid album that we’re yet to hear? As these folks didn’t stop shuffling their feet all night. They even demanded an encore, which is a little hard to do for a band whom have no more than a 45-minute set in their tank.

The band haven’t produced anything too different from the over-saturated “indie-rock” market that we hear on a daily basis, but they are a band that are good at what they do and for that reason alone; catch me busting some grooves at their next show.
