Review: Hudson Taylor- Leopardstown Racecourse, Dublin- 20/06/13

Rapidly growing Dublin brothers, Harry and Alfie, better known to their respectably large fanbase as Hudson Taylor returned home to Dublin to perform at one of many nights of Bulmers Live at Leopardstown.

Gracing this outdoor stage in the rare Irish sun, they delivered a top performance surrounded by the animated buzz of Leopardstown racecourse. Opening with a bang on the chords of ‘Drop of Smoke‘, they were already drawing the scattered crowd in towards the stage. From familiar fans singing lyrics in their direction, to freshly acquainted faces nodding their heads and stamping their feet in approval, Hudson Taylor had leopardstown alive.

Firing through a set of old tracks and a mix of newer tracks, Harry and Alfie weren’t shy of performing- even if Harry’s voice was “horse” from the races, as he wittingly put it. Not letting this massive shatter in the works destroy any aspect of their set, they soldiered on with Tadhg Walsh-Peelo playing a massive part in maintaining the harmonies.

Relatively new song- ‘Weapons‘ definitely held itself as a stand-out song of the night for me. This track introduces the more mellow side of Hudson Taylor, but on a powerful, booming platform. Elevating the usual flawless harmonies as the focal point of this song, it works wonderfully. Blending together as a duo in a way that only brothers could, these two guys hold a fantastic stage presence which is delightful to watch, whether on a small intimate stage, an outdoor setting, or anywhere in between; They just have the comfort to move from an energetic side, straight to a softer more harmony-driven side.

Approcahing the final song, which came to be the title track of their debut ep- ‘Battles‘, they finished just as they entered; with pure passion and energy- whilst flinging two copies of their EP into the crowd, I should add. As ‘Battles‘ drew to an end, Harry subtly made his way to the keyboard for what was an inevitable “encore”- in a sense. Psyched up to play their final song of the night, and an utterly successful mash-up at that which stands tall alongside them and their music career from their early busking days- ‘Lose Yourself Walking On The Flume‘ echoed around this buzzing campus.

A wonderfully balanced set executed by a band who are fast becoming Irish icons for the music industry, the beautiful setting of Leopardstown was lit up. Pouring every ounce of stamina they had into this performance to steal the outdoor stage, it’s certainly creating an exciting feel for Hudson Taylor owning many festival vibes this summer.
