Review : Bored Nothing – I Wish You Were Dead

Released on Spunk Records and with a series of DIY shows behind them, Bored Nothing appear to be a band of some resourcefulness. From the handmade CD’s, to recording on a 4 track, the stage is set for some lo-fi waifness.

There are a number of similarly inclined bands currently circulating around the globe, and the re-ignition of My Bloody Valentine has people reaching for their old shoegaze mixtapes, but the material here has been approached with verve, not merely as some curio of a bygone age. Where most writers fall down in this discipline is by writing sounds first and the song last. Bored Nothing have no such setbacks.

Dreamy and effervescent from the opening bars, there is a child-like quality to I Wish You Were Dead, and a maturity in the delicate reserve of the sound that negates the infantile title. The vocals sound as though they are being half-imagined, as though being heard in the world between consciousness and sleep. That the track gets more dreamy and ghostly towards the end is testament to Bored Nothings’ understanding of their own voice, something truly rare in many artists today.

This is a well-written, unhurried song from a band who seem to exist in perpetual summer. Spending time with the remainder of the material available on Soundcloud shows that this is far from a fluke. If you ever harboured affection for Slowdive, or fancy the Beach Boys as stripped-down garage songsmiths, this is the release for you. Great stuff.
