Review: Roxanne De Bastion – The Real Thing

Meet Roxanne De Bastion,  a singer/songwriter originally from Berlin, her debut album The Real Thing, out April 19th, is like a warm spring day in sonic form. Roxanne caught a one way flight to the UK from her native Germany to follow her own life in music in 2007. She is express enough her thanks for the chance to do what she loves best for the day job and is “infinitely thankful” for her fans and for “coming to my shows, listening to my words and for your support!”

Album opener ‘1964’is a great spring track, introducing the album and Roxanne to the world. From the off she is trying and succeeding to win our hearts with her warmth and kindness, The first thing we hear Roxanne sing is “How do you do, I have come to tell you that I like… you”.  I can’t help but melt at the little giggle and whistled solo, it makes me smile every time!

The latest single from The Real Thing is ‘Some Kind Of Creature”, Roxanne’s delivers sweet vocals with a hint of malice with in this track. The acoustic guitar sits sharp with classic singer/songwriter style and fits well under Roxanne’s lyrics, “For seven years I woke up to early, they robbed me of my dreams”.

For the chorus Roxanne gives a little more passion, pushing her voice that bit further and against the spoken style of the verse. This gives more energy to the choruses, letting the song paint in brighter, vivid colours.

Other highlights are ‘My Shield’, ‘The Real Thing’ and ‘Red And White Blood Cells’, with its contagious guitar line that morph into big distorted chords and a brilliantly scratchy solo. The song is kooky, original and just a delight.
