PREMIERE: Steve Young – Last Supper

Scottish musician Steve Young is gearing up to release his emotive new single, Last Supper. Following on from his 2021 debut Endlessly Changing, the multi-instrumentalist skilfully exhibits his ability to incorporate a range of influences into eclectic, nuanced songwriting.

Having spent years on the circuit, creating success as a songwriter and saxophonist with The Secret Souls, The Imagineers and Alabaster Jones, as well as playing gigs with legendary Glasgow band Scheme, Steve Young decided to go it alone. Taking inspiration from classic songwriters of the past, think Lennon and McCartney to Bowie and Dylan, Steve began to cultivate a sound unique to his own experiences. While ‘Endlessly Changing’ was more than a nod to Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, lasted single Last Supper has a sound closer to home, a sonic reminder of peak Del Amitri. Foot stomping beats and hip shaking guitar notes lead into a memorable chorus that will swirl around your head for days.

With the world having experienced such seismic events over the past few years, the track explores themes we can all relate to. As Steve explains:

“Written during the dark days of a pandemic lockdown, the song is paradoxically uplifting, positive, an antidote for the existential crisis we’ve experienced in the last few Covid years. Last Supper explores dreams and failures and the vulnerability and delights of love using romanticised imagery. The familiarity of the imagery in this song is most of the power. I’ve stripped away the story to the bare bones of the lure of a romantic life, with all its pain and ecstasy’s. The darkness is shot through with flashes of brightness and light with a harmony laden chorus. The lyrics are heavy in religious triggers, in a godless age of science the imagery still holds some meaning and resonates at an instinctive level.”

Last Supper won’t be the final piece of the puzzle for Steve, with 2022 looking like a busy year for the artist. With two singles under his belt, he is now aiming to release throughout the year, building a catalogue of songs that reinforce is reflective yet uplifting sound.

Last Supper is out on 6th may.
