This June at House Of Savages

Festival season is now upon us. Lukewarm beer, pungent body odor, port-a-loos and dressing like a twat are not only now OK, they are things to be encouraged, even celebrated. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not being a cynically ironic, I love all those things… well maybe not the port-a-loos.

Anyway, just because it is the (musical) holiday season don’t think we’re putting our feet up here at House Of Savages HQ. We have an incredible summer of music planned for you all, starting on June 10th  we invite you along to meet 4 acts you’re sure to love.

Delphine

Delphine: https://soundcloud.com/delphineband

Our first all-girl band at HofS, how has it taken us that long?! Well if they’ve been biding their time, than the wait has definitely been worth it. Even with only demos to go on (they’re that new) Danielle Cosh, Charlotte Treadaway and Ellie MacDougall sound like a band on the way up. They are similar in style to some of the other bands currently heading the female-rock revival like Sleater-Kinney and Honeyblood but with elements of more folky artists like Augustines as well. Of a small selection of songs, you can’t help but notice the energy of the drums, the passion behind the way they are delivered on the final section of Shelter makes the live experience something to really look forward to.

hangnails

…and The Hangnails: http://andthehangnails.bandcamp.com/

Splitting their time between York and London, Martyn Fillingham and Steven Reid (I’m assuming that this is not the Steven Reid that plays right-back for Burnley) describe their music as “Loud-As-Fuck-Guitar-Pop”. Saying they recently supported Brawlers gives you a good idea of the sort of music to expect, though I could equally compare to someone like Japandroids. The duo has been plugged by NME and had the video to most recent single Everybody’s Luck (a song that would not be out of place in the noughties New York scene alongside The Strokes and The Walkmen) premiered by Clash Magazine demonstrating their rising reputation. They have also announced that they will be supporting the legendary Stranglers back home in York, which is fricking sweet! Already on to their 4th album, the crunching guitars and passionate vocals well surely make for a kick-ass set.

Kit Trigg: https://soundcloud.com/kit-trigg

Our monthly dose of grunge (this month with a large helping of blues) comes from Kit Trigg. Kit, who is only 19 years old, is one of those guitarists whose instrument seems to become an extension of his body. The riff’s hit you straight in the gut, the solo shakes you by the shoulders and your head bangs involuntarily. With vocal’s as coarse as sandpaper, songs like single Lucky Smile feel raw and intense, you can’t help but be drawn in, The Dead Weather, Black Keys and Sheepdogs all come to mind when looking for comparisons. A busy summer of touring ahead of him, Kit will be supporting Nick Oliveri on the London leg of his upcoming national tour at Boston Music Room, impressive stuff!

Childcare

Childcare: https://soundcloud.com/childcare

London 4-piece Childcare are a group that ooze swagger. Having emerged a year ago with a debut 4-track EP led by single Flush they have since been quietly building a buzz around their catchy hooks and singable choruses. Recently releasing new single, an Iggy Pop influenced two-minute thrash Diesel Therapy, this summer promises to be one that really sees them push on forward. Instead of usual gig attire frontman Ed Cares paints his torso with symbolic images (birds, trees, flowers) before launching into songs where the lyrics are delivered at break neck speed. His lyrics along with the rest of the band, produce hooks on every track that immediately stick in your head, so much so that I found myself humming the chorus to Kimberly hours after listening to it. In terms of comparing the sound to other bands it is a little difficult, there is a cacophony of influences coming in. If you pushed me I would say that the punk/ska influence mixed with some great pop hooks leads me to suggest Blondie as a comparison, the band certainly don’t discourage this with their fantastic Hangin’ On The Telephone.
