Interview: Sunset Sons – “Festival season is IT for me; shit loads of people, bands and cider!”

Having played a range of shows across the UK and Ireland, as well as being announced for numerous festivals this Summer, Sunset Sons have been on a steep upward journey since the release of their latest EP ‘The Fall Line’.

We caught up with the man in charge of vocals and piano, Rory Williams…

You guys have recently been playing quite a few dates across the UK and then over to Dublin – how did they all go?

Yes we have! The whole tour was brilliant, I was in need of some sleep. We all were. But the crowds and drinks came out for a good time.

Was there one date in particular that stood out?

I would have to say London, just because it was the biggest show we’d played. We had the light show, the full shebang!

You’ve now got a sold out show in London, and then off to play some festivals including the Great Escape in Brighton, and of course heading off to the US – how are you feeling about the next few months? What’s it like being on the road the whole time?

Being on the road has its ups and downs, you spend a lot of time with the same people, but I can’t think of a better job, especially when you sell out a show early. There’s a lot of excitement leading up to it for us. Festival season is IT for me – shit loads of people, bands and cider!

Let’s talk a little bit about Barn on the Farm – what are you expecting from that? Have you ever been or what have you heard about it?

Let’s talk about that for sure! I hadn’t ever heard of it until it was mentioned to us, but after talking to a few friends and doing some research, it looks great. I’m very excited to be part of it. I’m a country boy at heart so I can’t wait!

Your new EP ‘The Fall Line’, which includes the single ‘Medicine‘ is out now for a couple of months. With that EP, did you guys consciously do anything different than previous EPs or what was the process like? Was there anything you learned from previous EPs that you brought to this release?

Each time we step into the studio there’s been a little more time and a little bit more money. To have more time on this EP was perfect. I feel it’s good to let things breath, it can become a bit of a blur when you’re rushing through a record. It’s one of my favourites to date.

Which track off the EP was your favourite to work on or is maybe your favourite to perform live?

My favourite track isn’t one we have performed live yet; ‘LIES‘. It’s a bit more of a down beat number. I love the sound of the instruments on this one. We had some experimentation on this tune, not too much though.

So apart from working on your own music, what are you currently listening to? When you’re on the road, what’s the playlist like!?

I personally listen to anything and everything. I’m a big fan of the new Catfish [and the Bottlemen] album and the Jamie T one too. Hoping to catch them this year. Also the Vaccines, Alt j and Kill It Kid get a good listen.

Finally, is there any news on an album in the near future that you’re able to reveal yet? Or what are your rough plans as a band for the next while?

For the album we are just putting the final touches to it, it should be released end of the year. For the next while we will be getting involved at the festivals , it’s gonna be a great summer.

Thanks so much for the interview Rory, will definitely be catching you at Barn on the Farm, see you then!

Bring on Barn on the Farm, see you there!
