Single Review: Hudson Taylor – Weapons

2013 was an incredible year for Irish brothers Hudson Taylor and it looks like 2014 is set to be even bigger.

Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 premiered their new single, ‘Weapons’, which will be released on 17th March. He also selected their track ‘Second Best’ as a ‘next hype’, describing their music as “classic song writing”. The duo have also received daytime airplay on Radio 1.

Throughout 2013 Harry and Alfie kept themselves busy and played some huge gigs. They supported Jake Bugg and Kodaline, as well as filling in last minute for Tom Odell to open at Hyde Park for the Rolling Stones. Glastonbury, Bestival and Cambridge Folk Festival also saw them take to the stage.

Weapons’ has quite a stripped back sound to it, which only makes it easier to fully appreciate every element of the song and how intricately and beautifully constructed it is. Backed by what can only be described as a ‘gentle stomp’ you will find yourself tapping your feet along to the rhythm.

The lead vocals are exquisite and really suit the acoustic and folk styles heard in the song. Harmonies are used perfectly through the entirety of this track, as well as some subtle strings, which really add something to the whole sound.

The chorus is incredibly catchy, emotive and demonstrates the whole meaning of the song with the lyrics: “Put down your weapons, let’s be defenceless, surrender your love, no more secrets.”

Having already rounded up a huge following, with over three million views on their YouTube videos and selling over 20,000 copies of their EPs, Hudson Taylor are well and truly on their way to massive success.

If they continue producing records like ‘Weapons’ they really could become the next big thing.

A beautifully and intricately structured folk record with real depth.
