Wimbledon Day Six: Robson battles way to second week, Djokovic charges past Chardy

Anything Murray can do, Djokovic can do at least as well if not better, it seems as the Serbian powerhouse continued his impressive form to breeze past Jeremy Chardy in straight sets; like Murray, he is yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament. The world number 1 made light work of his 28th seeded opponent as he has done with everyone else he’s faced this week but is on his way to the business end of the tournament now and faces a clash with veteran, Tommy Haas next week with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.

David Ferrer was almost made to eat his words in today’s action too as he’d stated after his previous match that he felt he was improving his grass-court game all the time and expected to go further into the tournament; those expectations almost crashed down to earth today as Ferrer had a scare against Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov. Ferrer came through a brutal encounter lasting over three hours in five sets; five set matches have been rare at this year’s tournament however with only 12 taking place in the first two rounds of the men’s singles, a record for the Open Era at Wimbledon.

Juan Martin Del Potro was almost on the receiving end of another injury scare as he won in straight sets against Slovenia’s Grega Zemlja. Del Potro picked up the knock in the third set chasing down a drop shot but the hard work was already done for Del Potro as Zemlja looked to be running on fumes after not really recovering from his epic five-setter with Grigor Dimitrov that spanned the two previous days. Andreas Seppi awaits Del Potro in the fourth round but beyond that, the Argentinian will be in uncharted territory as Del Potro has never moved beyond the fourth round in this tournament.

Mikhail Youzhny awaits Andy Murray in the fourth round after the Russian prevailed in his clash with Viktor Troicki. This match was supposed to take place yesterday but due to the typically unpredictable weather that surrounds London at this time of year it was called off and moved to day six. The delay seemed to put Youzhny in a bit of a rush as he quickly dispatched of his opponent in straight-sets and in the press conference afterwards was quick to point out that he won’t be daunted by the crowd when it comes to facing home favourite Andy Murray on Monday.

After much was made of Laura Robson’s popular Twitter followers in her last match rather than her impressive showing, the Brit made sure she switched the attention back to her play as she completed a stunning comeback against Marina Erakovic. After a dismal showing in the first set where nothing seemed to be going quite right for Robson, losing the set 6-1, she regained her composure and flair in dramatic fashion as she won a close second set 7-5 before blowing her lower-ranked opponent out of the water with a 6-3 win in the decider and become the first British woman to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon since 1998. Robson’s impressive form of late ensures she will also be the first British woman to break into the world’s top 30 ranked players since 1987 when the new rankings are released after the completion of this year’s tournament at SW19.
