Single Review: Young Rebel Set – The Lash Of The Whip

”Young Rebel Set’ are the free-spirited folk-rock quintet whom where dubbed as folk-rocks freshest ‘Graft Rockers’ by the New Musical Express”

Blooming from the North-East of England, Young Rebel Set are the free-spirited folk-rock quintet whom where dubbed as folk-rocks freshest ‘Graft Rockers’ by the NME, The Young Rebel set have seen a boom in acknowledgement in the most prestigious of prestigious music outlets around – high appraise on their behalf  considering their lack of quantity in the work they have thrown to the wind ( If these cats teach us anything, it’s quality not quantity kids!)

Back in 2009 blew mass radio stations to pieces with their first single, ‘If I Was’. Over half a decade later, the boys are back with more fire and audio ecstasy then ever before. Now, it’s true, the boys have been working for the past couple of years, the acclaimed LP, ‘Curse Our Love’  was just released two years ago, however, it’s safe to say, the music industry was not hit with a bigger swing than as we have seen with their new single, ‘The Lash Of The Whip’.

‘The Lash Of The Whip’ is a theme-park of a record, it confuses you, it entrances you, it takes all of your consciousness and throws it to the ground, turns your world upside down. Mathew Chipchases vocals ignite the passion and grit of that of an Southern Irish rebel, declaring his independence over a pint of Guinness in the local well, But, you’d be fooled to believe this was an Irish band. These Stockton-On-Tees blue collars are most definitely your classic english band however, go against all the formalities on your english boy bands.. No dodgy “Mum” hair cuts. No Gimmicks. No-fuss. Just real hard-hitting son of a gun rock and roll with a quintessential folk influence.

The record definitely has an old school feel to it, a certain grass-rooted vibe, it was many times that i listened to this record that i realised why i thought this – It’s those killer fucking guitars and steady, almost jazz influenced drum beat! There is a reason all of those old classic rock songs have stood the test of time, those records we still listen to today, your Queens, your Rolling Stones and your Bob Segers, It was those fucking guitars! not many acts can get such an illuminating sound as we once heard before, after listening to this track i can just feel all of those hopeful guitar-players, kicking out in their rooms by their Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton shrine, playing with their amplifiers to the break of dawn to try and get such a enticingly groovy sound to it. These boys didn’t have to try to hard though as ‘The Lash Of The Whip’ seems to incorporate all the fundamentals of clean, sexy guitar work – A killer and entrancing riff, rapturous solo work throw into the mix, just for good-luck and classic un-distorted rhythm work.

To sum up this track would be the job of masters and cracker-jacks, it’s an exploration of the sub-conscious that seems to hit people in different ways, for me, it’s a trip, it’s a fascinating odyssey of how rock and roll should be approached by bands hoping to make it today.
In the day and age of itunes and ipods, if there is one single you go out and buy just to store it in your collection just to get off to every now and then, this summer, make it ‘Lash Of The Whip’
