EP Review: Frank Hamilton- Summer

Off the back of another very successful headline tour, UK singer/songwriter, Frank Hamilton has gifted his growing fanbase with a fantastic 4-track EP…

Taking on the role of being possibly the most serious release Frank has created to date, I’m sure it had some people a bit sketchy about the whole thing. Previously known for his #OneSongAWeek campaign and his #LondonEyeEP, the idea of Frank actually just working on four tracks, making one the title track, and releasing it as a normal EP, was a bit alien in some ways.

But hey, Frank- good move!

Title track ‘Summer’ opens the album with a slightly more full sound than we’re used to from Frank. This track was previously featured on the ‘Best of One Song A Week’ album, but we now see a refurbished version with fresh drum beats and clear backing vocals. Having released his first ever Official Music Video for this song a few weeks back, ‘Summer’ was already flooded with attention online.

Second track, ‘Circles’, is a lighter track, highlighting Frank’s vocals. A steady rhythm behind it, the song fits together wonderfully. Previously unheard, it is, in a way, the only completely unheard track on the EP. It stays true to Frank’s familiar mellow sound, allowing his vocals to be cast over the instrumentals, producing his stong English accent which is always so central to his songs.]

After the announcement of this EP, fans were over the moon to discover Frank would be including his wel renowned cover of Wheatus’ ‘Teenage Dirtbag’. Standing as track number 3, the studio version is even better than previous version I had heard. Slowing the track down, as well as putting more mellow acoustics and guitar focuses on it, he really makes it his own. Frank essentially creates an “easy listening” track out of a complete opposite.

Final track on the EP is a fantastically produced remix of ‘Summer’. Mixing up the genre of the EP as a whole and creating a sound for everyone, ‘Summer’ quickly becomes a “fist-pumping”, club banger of a tune… without conforming to the musical deafness that shadows the mainstream scene at the moment of course! This remix lights a spark to the more laid back, gentle sound of previous tracks.

An all-round, well balanced blend of tracks, with the usual lyrical shines we see from Frank.
