All-girl alt-rock group Venus Grrrls have released their pounding new single Violet State of Mind. The track is the follow-up to the five-piece’s 2021 EP Potions.
Heavy, riffy and thumping right from the first beat, Violet State of Mind is an unrelenting slice of hard-hitting alt-rock. The guitars, drums and synths are three juggernauts battling for supremacy until the Biffy-esque riffs and pauses make way for GK’s powerful vocal. There’s an operatic tone to her vocal which is astounding and at odds with the brooding, heavy vibe of the track. GK combines high, angelic notes with angsty, gravelly punches, holding her own against the backdrop of unrelenting riffs. The chorus of “Hey, hey, hey are you looking at me? Cos my heart beats fast… Wanna know your name, do you feel the same?” is anthemic and deserves to be shouted at the top of your lungs. It’s a track to empower and inspire and taps into the 90s Riot Grrrl energy, repackaging it for modern times.
When speaking of Violet State of Mind, Venus Grrrls said “Violet State of Mind is the anthem to your hot girl summer, be it spending time with your best mates in the sun, or falling in love with yourself and/or someone else. We want this song to be on your get ready playlists and allow you to reach into those inner deities that we know you are.”
Venus Grrrls comprises of GK (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Jess Ayres (lead guitar), Hannah Barraclough (bass), Grace Stubbings (Synth) and Gabby Cooke (drums), all hailing from Leeds. The five-piece are heavy advocates for the respect of women in rock music and aim to get their voices heard with their head-turning, anthemic rock offerings. Venus Grrrls are due to play at Kendal Calling and Truck Festival and I’m sure this is only the first we’ve heard of these newest alt-rock trailblazers.
