Single Review: Venus Grrrls – Liar Liar

Alternative rock five-piece Venus Grrrls have released their new single Liar Liar.

Hailing from Leeds, Venus Grrls comprise of Grace Kelly/GK (singer/rhythm guitar), Hannah Barraclough (bass), Eliza Lee (lead guitar), Grace Stubbings (synth) and Gabby Cooke (drums) and the band has supported Dream Wife, Black Honey and Crawlers and have gained airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio X and BBC Introducing.

Liar Liar opens with a rip-roaring guitar riff and GK’s uncompromising and head-turning vocal. Layered with an aggressive and unabating drumbeat, it doesn’t take long to realise that Venus Grrrls mean business. The chorus of “I don’t care what you ex did, your words are infected. Liar Liar, pants on fire” is infectious and demands to be shouted at the top of your lungs. As well as possessing strength, GK’s vocals are beautifully ethereal and the high notes and harmonies that follow the first chorus highlight her talent. She also slips into some spoken word which lends the track an edgy vibe and the understated synths coupled with the heavy bassline lifts the overarching angsty mood of the track.

When speaking of Liar Liar, GK said, “Liar Liar took some time to finish, both lyrically and instrumentally. The topic, often very personal and contextual, was something I wanted to make sure was adequately represented despite its vast nature. The idea was that the ‘narrator’ of the song has become aware of the dynamic of another relationship, and that it isn’t necessarily a good dynamic. Spotting patterns of emotional manipulation and abuse, the narrator seeks not only to empower the victim but to let the perpetrator know that they’ve figured out what’s happening despite the ‘games’.”

Liar Liar is available to stream now. Find out more about Venus Grrrls here and have a listen to Liar Liar and previous single Lidocaine below.
