Irish soul, pop and funk artist Toucan returns with his new single Don’t Understand Why. The track is the first new music Toucan (aka Conor Clancy) has released since 2020.
Don’t Understand Why possesses an undeniable groove. Funk and soul is the underpinning of the track, with Clancy’s smooth as butter vocal gliding between the guitar strums. Opening line “I feel the chemistry sparkling and burning between you and me” sets the mood for the jazzy, passionate, lounge-feel the track gives off. The synths and keys nod to a retro-inspired vibe, and further add a timeless appeal that’s a signature of Toucan’s tracks. The chorus of “I just don’t understand why, tell me baby, cos I just don’t get to know” is lifted by the choral harmonies and given a soulful edge that resonates far after the track’s reached its end. This coming together of funk and soul suits Clancy’s vocal to a tee and Don’t Understand Why radiates grooviness and an uplifting air. Peppered with brass elements, we’re left with a sound that’s undeniably fulfilling in its complexity and so silky smooth that it dares you to press repeat.
When speaking of making new music, Clancy said, “I’ve spent the last couple of years getting the sound to be exactly as I want it, and I’m buzzing to get this song out there. I’ve had a bit of a break from releasing new music, and I think Don’t Understand Why is the perfect track to kickstart the year of new releases – it’s bright, upbeat, and still laid back and groovy. It’s got a feel-good factor that’s become an integral part of the Toucan sound.”
Toucan has performed at numerous festivals such as Electric Picnic, Love Supreme and Meltdown Festival since releasing his two EPs and over the past few years he’s played sold-out shows across the UK and Ireland, including one at London’s Omeara.
