Scottish singer songwriter Steven Young has pulled together his vast experience of musicianship on the Scottish music scene, and harnessed it into a distinctive sound he can call his own. Having released last years ‘Tangerine Drugstore’, the artist has followed this up with the broody new single, Delirious World.
Young has been a prevalent face in Scotland over the past decade. His association with The Imagineers saw the band play numerous times on Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show in the US as well as make stirring appearances at T in The Park. When the band ultimately came to an end, he went onto form GANGS, immediately picking up support from tastemakers such as Clash Magazine. However, there was always something missing, with Young keen to explore different cultures in order to add his own flavour to the music he creates. Touring Europe, he learned from musicians in France, Spain and Italy culminating in his desire to release under his moniker.
Latest single Delirious World is the first of 2022 in what will be a flurry of releases leading to his debut solo album. Dark, brooding soundscapes encapsulate Young’s work as he takes inspiration from artists like Scott Walker and The Last Shadow Puppets. There is a smattering of Johnny Marr’s guitar work allied to the latino influences he picked up in France, Spain and Italy. The lyrics are a self reflection on a world that, at times, doesn’t make much sense to most of us. There is depth and a sense of exploration: what does this all mean? Delirious World is a fitting start to 2022 for Young and will be a platform for him to share his breadth of work over the coming year. We can’t wait to hear more.
Steven’s solo career has already been noticed by the Scottish music press with features in The Daily Record and Tenement TV as well as radio airplay on BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway, Roddy Hart, Janice Forsyth shows and Amazing Radio’s Jim Gellatly show. Delirious World will be the first single of many throughout 2022, with an EP to follow and culminating in the release of his debut album by the end of the year.
