Come and get lost in the misty, night-drenched aura of Shadowlark’s debut cut ‘Do Your Worst’. It’s hard not to love a bit of gloomy synth pop, in that there’s an entrancing theatricality that lurks around it.
A brand new trio from Leeds, Shadowlark’s music reads like the sonic bridge between PVRIS’ declarative rocktronic energy and the New Wave yearning of Hurts. Ellen Smith’s voice breathes with a smokey worldliness and the soul of someone who was a Blues legend in another life – which lends itself to the chic cinematics of the song.
Boldly murky, ‘Do Your Worst’ permeates a number of different genres – Ellen sings of strength and defiance, with an accompaniment of shimmering synths and her own subtle licks of guitar before urging the oppressive character of the raw lyrics to hit with the best shot above the haunting shadows of the stirring chorus.
Not a lot is known for what their next move is, but with such a bold statement of a debut single, the Loiner threesome are not a force to be taken lightly.
