Single Review: Redolent – ‘I Thought They Were Just Fireworks’

As the year comes to a close, Edinburgh four-piece Redolent have made their anticipated return unveiling their hypnotic new single ‘I Thought They Were Just Fireworks’.

Having picked up an impressive list of press support on the back of the memorable single ‘Dantercepies’, including the likes of Clash Magazine and The Skinny, Redolent have reappeared with yet another cracking single. If ‘Dantercepies’ was in the realm of artists such as Holy Fuck and Liars, ‘I Thought They Were Just Fireworks’ is treading the line into post-hardcore territory. Owing inspiration to trailblazers in the genre, think At The Drive-In, Redolent have shown an ability to cultivate and mutate their sound release upon release.

A fervent track that is intense both sonically and lyrically, ‘I Thought They Were Just Fireworks’ is a sprawling, confrontational track. Written about a recurring nightmare involving a mass shooting, ‘I Thought They Were Just Fireworks’ bristles from the start, emitting an anger and hostility perfectly matching the sense of dread and conflict associated with the topic.

Comprised of Robin Herbert (vocals, guitar, keys), Robbie White (bass, keys), Danny Herbert (guitar, keys) and Andrew Turnbull (drums), Redolent were formed in 2012. The band became a fixture on the Scottish music scene with the likes of BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway, Amazing Radio, M Magazine and The National taking note of their distinctive sound. Known for their electric live performances, Redolent have supported We Were Promised Jetpacks as well as taking the stage at T In The Park and Belladrum festivals.

I Thought They Were Just Fireworks is out now.

  1. I really like that song! Thank you for bringing Redolent to my attention, will definitely listen to more of their stuff!

I would like to return the favour and reverse the role.

If you, or anyone from Fortitude Magazine, find yourselves in London next week, I would love to invite you to a gig of an artist that I represent – Jennings Couch. He will be playing at The Monarch in Camden on 22nd January from 8 pm and I would love it if you would be able to come.

(No expectations of an article, just wanted to show you more of great music!)

Here’s a link to Jennings’ music and the Facebook event. If you have any questions, please let me know!
