Single Review: Longfellow – Siamese Lover

London based, indie-pop dons, Longfellow made a great start to 2014; having played to a sold out room for Pandamonium Presents on January 7th and with their latest single ‘Siamese Lover’ due for release on 27th January.

The five-piece have already gained support from some big names, including Steve Lamacq from BBC Radio 6, Jo Wiley from BBC Radio 2 and Huw Stephens from BBC Radio 1. Even Coldplay shared the video on their official website. They also supported Keane at their 10-year anniversary show at the Tunbridge Wells Forum.

Siamese Lover’ has a somewhat anthemic feel to it, the kind of track you could imagine hearing at a festival with a crowd full of people singing along. This all comes courtesy of the catchy chorus that is beautifully accompanied by subtle and understated harmonies.

Throughout the entirety of the song we hear the up-tempo backing beat of the drums, bursting with plenty of hi-hat and cymbals. We are introduced with the electric guitar, which sits exquisitely over the drums and bass guitar, but then steps aside allowing the piano to take control for the verse. The chorus sees the guitar take over again while the piano takes a backseat until the next verse and so on and so forth.

The song is all about the dangers of living for your relationship and being so attached to somebody that you lose sight of your individual identities. The video, directed by Steve Glashier, depicts this fantastically as it follows the relationship of two young girls. One of the girls has trouble with a bully and to prevent him from threatening their bubble the girls deal with him in rather twisted way.

A strong all round alt-pop track that you could play on repeat for hours without getting bored.
