EP Review: Puppet Rebellion – No Means Yes

‘No Means Yes’ is the awe inspiring EP by Puppet Rebellion. It will make you drop what you’re doing and sit and listen from beginning to end as all five tracks have their own unique stand out moments; yet complement each other with the most elegant yet dark and dirty riffs and lyrics.

Opening track ‘Pirouette’ takes you into another world, where you can imagine yourself being stood in front of them on stage, oblivious to world around you absorbing every deep drum beat, heart felt lyric and and bouncy riff. The repeated words “you’ve been lying to him, you’ve been lying to me” make you feel like you know Simon Monaghan (singer) and believe every word he screams out with such passion.

Monaghan’s talent reaches new levels in ‘Cupboard Painted Red’ as the powerful deepness of the first track blends in a soft, mellow, welcoming voice as he asks “can you help me”. The vocals stand out so perfectly on this track that you almost forget the beautifully contrasting guitar than quickly change between calm riffs and overwhelmingly powerful chorus’s.

The steady intro of ‘Loner in Disguise’ keeps the EP flowing and fluctuating between the dark sounds and emotional lyrics. This song has its own individuality however has similarities to many other songs; which makes it hard to pin point exactly what song it is like. It almost feels like the song has been around for years prior, and has the strength to still be strong in years to come.

The solo drum beat followed up by stand out bass and guitar riffs of ‘Green Eyed Monster’ bring the tempo back up to speed and has you dancing along whether you’re at home alone or listening to it with friends. If ‘Cupboard Painted Red’ shows of the bands excellent vocal talent then this track is the proof they have the instrumental talent to stand up to the high expectations.

The closing track is a remix of the song ‘Chemical Friends’  from their earlier EP. Cai Caslavinieri’s remix has stark contrasts to all the other songs on the EP, yet feels so at home amongst them. It is a great ending to the EP and with sounds echoing some Pendulum songs it shows they can stand their own amongst the modern music scene and have the ability to adapt to any genre differences in the future.

‘No Means Yes’ is the EP which proves that Puppet Rebellion are a powerful force that while strive to bigger and better in the near future. Even at this early stage in their career this EP won’t seem overshadowed in the typical music fans record collection.
