Single Review: Kyla La Grange – Cut Your Teeth

Fans of Kyla La Grange will no doubt agree that her magnificent debut album ‘Ashes’ was very much a wild animal of immoveable magnitude, with it’s well-executed take on Rootsty Folk-Rock accompanied by a voice full of beauty and wisdom that recall fellow singer-songwriters Tori Amos & Kate Bush. Judging by lead single ‘Cut Your Teeth’, the singer’s next album will be an animal of a different breed entirely.

The album included ‘Walk Through Wall’; an anthem woven together with the emotive and plaintive lyricism of Florence + The Machine and the glorious Stadium-Rock guitar of U2’s very best, ‘Vampire Smile’; the bittersweet Folk ballad full of savage lyrics alluding to an obsessive romance. And ‘Been Better’, a rhythmic Indie Rock stomper that features Kyla exploring her slithering lower register to great effect.

Two years later, Kyla makes an eagerly awaited return, but in place of immense drums and ferocious guitars, she brings out the electronics on the new album’s lead single, ‘Cut Your Teeth’. This mellow beauty features Kyla cooing in wispy and angelic tones over a minimalist beat, 80’s-ballad keys and ghostly backing calls, a recipe suggesting that Kyla has recently added the likes of Burial to her iPod.

The singer’s change in genre is definitely drastic and may rub fans of her more traditional sound the wrong way, but experimentation and adaptability is all part of an artist’s evolution.
