Announced: The 2014 BAFTA Nominations

bafta nominees
Yesterday saw the announcement of the 2014 British Academy Film Award nominations.

Alfonso Cuarón’s space drama Gravity leads the pack with eleven nominations, closely followed by Steve Mcqueen’s 12 Years a Slave and David O Russell’s American Hustle.

As always, there are a few noticable omissions; Spike Jonze’s Her and The Coen Brother’s Inside Llewyn Davis were expected to to fair well, and Matthew Mcconaughey and Jared Leto were favourites for acting nominations for Dallas Buyers Club. And of course there’s the ever present issue of what on earth makes a film qualify as ‘British’. Aside from that, it’s a solid year.

The BAFTAs will take place on February 16 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, and will be hosted by Stephen Fry.
