Single Review – Katie MF ‘Work Drinks’

Punk-folk singer Katie MF has released the exhilarating single Work Drinks. Taken from her forthcoming debut album, False Starts, Open Endings, and demonstrates her poetic punk-rock chutzpah.

Much like her previous single Japanese Whiskey, Work Drinks comes flying out of the traps from the opening beat. Katie has an unerring ability to combine pointed, politically charged lyrics with catchy melodies and bellowing, upbeat choruses.

The song itself exemplifies her use of socially conscious lyrics taking aim at society and, in particular, the patriarchy embedded in our day to day culture. Work Drinks is an ode to woman everywhere. Women who continually have to punch up in order to be seen as equal. Ferocious, tongue in cheek and hitting all the targets, Work Drinks is a breathless song from start to finish.

Katie MF is a mainstay in the London DIY scene. She has played with the likes of Frank Turner, Spanish Love Songs, Pkew Pkew Pkew, Chris Farren, Lightyear, Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun and Lauran Hibberd.

The pandemic enabled Katie to compile a large part of what would become her soon-to-be-released debut album, using the time to write and record. If the first two singles are anything to go by, False Starts, Open Endings will definitely be a record to look out for in 2023.

Work Drinks is out now via Lockjaw Records.
