Single Review – Femegades ‘Depleted’

Following the release of their acclaimed 2022 EP, Not All Men, London punk-rock band Femegades have released scuzzy new single Depleted.

The four-piece continue to exhibit their modern take on grunge, packed full of confrontational soundscapes and thoughtful lyricism. Last year’s Not All Men showcased what Femegades are all about with the record well supported by tastemakers far and wide. The band’s abrasive punk-rock attitude was heralded by the industries movers and shakers with the likes of Clash Magazine and Loud Women writing glowing words about the band.

Having taken some time to write and record new material, Femegades have once again shown themselves to be ‘ones to watch’. Depleted illustrates Femegades willingness to confront tough issues faced in today’s society. In amongst the in-your-face sonics, raging guitar and thudding beats is a nuanced, thought-provoking subject matter. Exploring the realities of motherhood, the song is from the perspective of women who have an unreasonable level of expectation placed upon them. The difficulties of motherhood cannot be understated. Despite this there is an unrealistic belief that they should ‘just be happy’. These external pressures can ultimately lead to burnout both mentally and physically.

The lyrics are wrapped up in a cacophony of soaring guitar, driven bass lines and the soulful vocals of singer Em.

Femegades have released two EP’s and multiple successful singles. The unveiling of Depleted will kickstart a swathe of single releases over the course of 2023 as the band look to continue to reach new heights both at home and abroad.

Depleted is out now via Regent Street Records.
