Single Review: Helen Boulding – Crooked Tooth

Helen Boulding: Sheffield’s most powerful pop-sensation and Yorkshires very own Joni Mitchell-esque superstar.

If, when reading this article, you feel as though you have been familiar with the name ‘Helen Boulding‘ before, you wouldn’t be mistaken. Boulding, the blonde bomb-shell with all the beauty of a Caribbean Queen and skill of a 17th century poet, has made her way through the music industry inviting commendable opportunities from some of the biggest names our generation has seen. Helen has written songs for the likes of Joe McElderry, Passenger, The Overtones and James Newman, As-well as working as part of the music team for acclaimed film productions such as ‘Some Things That Stay‘ and ‘Ashes & Sand’

Helen released her first studio album, ‘New Red Dress, back in 2008 on behalf of Maid In Sheffield’ and then bounced back in 2012 with her latest ground-breaking piece of work, ‘Calling All Angels’.

Crooked Tooth‘, Bouldings latest single, is the third mystical track taken from the album and what a blazing passion this song holds! One million or more hippies couldn’t make their way back from Woodstock, as high as kites, to head into a studio and come up with something as enchanting as this little number –  this diamond is magnetizing!

Crooked Tooth‘ , which was co-wrote with Clayhill’s very own Gavin Clark, is hailed as “the albums masterpiece, and although the delightfully love-struck sounds of songs like ‘Be With Me‘ and ‘It Might Just Be You‘ are all eligible candidates for the title, it’s easy to see why ‘Crooked Tooth’ steals the gold.

‘Perfect is not always attractive..but the imperfections are, that’s where the substance lies and what makes us fall in love with someone” decrees Helen, explaining that this number was inspired by her husbands very own ‘perfect imperfection’, a crooked tooth that the singer has fallen in love with.

However, in regards to the songCrooked Tooth‘, it’s hard to find any reason why the track could be deemed as anything but perfect – The song holds no limitations, no hit-and-miss qualities no loss of substance or sound, this feel-good fanciful rendition of a love-story is quintessentially impeccable.

With it’s gentle child-like vocals, echoing you into the heart of the story, taking you onto a journey of whimsical delight, sound-tracked by that sweetly abstract melody that leads you into a steady yet thundering drum beat breakdown which cradles the songs chorus, – this isn’t your typical bubble-gum adult-pop radio filler, this is 3 and a half minutes of your very own awe-inspiring aural utopia.

Official release of  ‘Crooked Tooth’  is December 30th though the song was made available on iTunes late October. Be sure to check your ITunes place market for your copy of ‘Calling All Angels’ this Christmas.
