Single review: Ed Sheeran – Sing

After the major success of his debut album ‘+’ , the highly anticipated announcement of Ed Sheeran’s return with new album ‘X’, was followed by the premier of the lead single ‘Sing‘ on BBC Radio 1 and more recently, its’ live debut on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

As the first single to be premiered from Sheeran’s new album, ‘Sing‘ instantly grabs you in with the upbeat beginning of the fast staccato-style rhythm of the guitar and simple drum beat. There is a new vibe in the new track, with similarity to the styling of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Like I Love You’. With an additional layer of a jazz/blues bass riff, you can’t but help nod along to the beat.

The added falsetto into the song shows the confidence and vocal range Sheeran has built upon from the release of his debut album, with his signature fast rhymes still evident throughout the song. Co-written and produced by guest Pharrell Williams, the new song is incredibly catchy with background vocals which are bound to be echoed by audiences when performed live.

With the new musical styling shown in the first single, we will have to eagerly await to hear more of  Sheeran’s sophomore album, due to be released June 23rd, with hope that more tracks will be released along the way.
