Single Review: Calvin Goldspink – The Cold

Calvin Goldspink, formerly of S Club Juniors, has released his rousing new solo single The Cold.

The Cold opens with atmospheric organs accompanying Calvin’s raw vocal, which is then contrasted against a heavy beat and layered harmonies. In a heartbeat the track is transformed by a flourish of electronic elements and a surge of guitars. I like the complexity of all the elements as they come together and build and Calvin’s vocal comes into its own as the notes soar through the chorus of “When the silence is gone, will you lead me on? When the silence is gone, will you lead me on?” Dips featuring guitar strums and heavy percussion or just organ keys before the synths return with a vengeance makes the chorus sound even more powerful. The outro of heavily manipulated synths is so at odds with the organ from the intro but I like how it displays the way the track has progressed.

When speaking of The Cold, Calvin said: “We all experience times of transition. When you’re in between jobs, a relationship or just stuck in a rut not knowing what’s next. The Cold is about embracing that moment and learning from the mistakes that got you there.”

Calvin gained fame as a member of the highly successful pop group S Club Juniors, which was formed in 2001 when he was just 12 years old. By the time he was 15 years old the band had sold over 3 million records and has their own TV series. He has since starred in Life Is Wild, Lifetimes, William & Kate and X-Men Origins. In 2014 Calvin wrote his debut EP The Lemon Tree while living in Hollywood.

Calvin also created his own music company, Breaking Sound, which supports emerging artists around the world. Breaking Sound has featured artists such as Lauv, Sam Fischer and Marias before they were signed. The company has expanded to accommodate its own radio station – Breaking Sound Radio – and record label – Breaking Sound Records. Speaking about his accomplishments with Breaking Sound, Calvin said: “Having had the chance to see inside the mainstream music industry’s tight bubble, releasing music independently has given me perspective on the areas that need attention. Emerging artists are the source of the entire industry. Breaking Sound provides a platform to help support artists at their inception and has become the mission statement for my team and I to take on.”
