Single Review: Bay Bryan – Sweet Joan

Having grown up in Colorado and now based in Manchester via Scotland, Bay Bryan has lived a nomadic lifestyle. While strutting their stuff as drag artist Queen Bayard, the mutli-talented creative has shown their versatility by carving out a music career as an alt.folk singer songwriter. Bay has unveiled latest single, the beautiful, Sweet Joan.

2021 saw Bay breaking out of their theatre/stage performance background as they released a couple of singles in the shape of ‘Sticky Shadows’ and ‘Let Go’. A promising outing as they began to cement their love for creating sumptuous vignettes very much in the form of singer songwriters past and present. However, Bay’s ability to conjure imaginative, story-led songs, cinematic and otherworldly, allows them to stand out from the crowd.

Sweet Joan further illustrates Bay’s unique talent. Sparse, ethereal and majestically undulating, Sweet Joan dances in the air with a knowing nod to 60’s British folk snseibloitlies as well as contemporary alternative artists from further afield. The track is another impressive offering from an artist who will only grow with each and every release.

The track is taken from Bay’s upcoming debut concept album, The Meadow, due for release in 2023. Bay has performed at Philly Fringe, Minneapolis Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as a number of Pride festivals across the UK. Sweet Joan will be one of a flurry of releases over the course of 2022 as Bay sets their sights on sharing their art with music lovers far and wide.

Sweet Joan is out now via Ginger Records.
