Singer-songwriter and folk musician Jo Mango has teamed up with a host of other musicians, as well as academic researchers and sustainability organisations to create the When Tomorrow Becomes Yesterday project. Bringing together musical, scientific and practical knowledge, the collective had released three downloadable tracks along with a video documentary, to promote their cause and raise awareness of global warming.
First track, ‘The Creasing’, sees Mango join forces with Louis Abbott; flowing with delicate, crystal-clear vocals and heart-wrenching melodies, it’s a charming slice of folk oozing a subtle power and sense of urgency.
Featuring Craig Beaton, in addition to Mango and Abbott, ‘Better Lands’ exudes beautiful melodies juxtaposed with its pressing subject matter and sense of impending doom. As the fragility of the musicality may appear to reflect the fragile state the world is in, the three vocalists harmonise together perfectly, creating a truly moving and spine-tingling warning to us all.
The third track available to download is ‘If I Could Choose’. A thought-provoking, emotion strewn offering, it’s perhaps the most catchy of the collection. Flowing with a sweeping cinematic majesty, it’s rich in musicality, and pressingly relevant in subject matter.
Tackling such a difficult subject is no mean feat, but Jo Mango and co. appear to break down barriers and send out their message in a way that’s not only deeply moving and important, but also an utter joy to the ears.
