Review: The Summer Set – Legendary

Legendary is the third album from The Summer Set. The album kicks off with “Maybe Tonight” which sounds like the kind of thing that you would hear at a 15 year old girls house party. Not that I am often at them, in all honesty I haven’t been to one since I was 15 but the nights playlists are burned into my brain like a traumatic memory. The next two tracks “Jukebox” and “Boomerang” are forgettable and the latter almost getting to the point of being nauseating.

“Lightening in a bottle” for me sounds like a desperate “We are cool, pay attention to us” plea with what is very unnecessary swearing in the chorus. For me it has no place, the song is far too much of a “mainstream pop” sound to have a swear word in particularly when it really doesn’t need to be there.

“F*ck You Over” the only song that I could listen to again on the album and possibly think about putting it onto my iPod, however the title puts me off. There is just no need to swear in the title of a song for me. It could be me getting old before my time but it is just unnecessary and again just a plea to sound cool. A side from personal grievances though the song is catchy and is the best song on the album.

By the time track 7, entitled “Happy For You” comes on I have started to realise that the album sounds like a mix between Usher and The Wanted with a little bit of a guitar riff in there every now and again and a little bit more swearing and this continues for the rest of the album, nothing to shout about and very forgettable tracks.

The Summer Set for me are not a brilliant band, I have their previous two albums and there are a few songs on each album that I do enjoy and sing a long to but every other I can skip without a second thought, unfortunately the only difference between this album and the others is that there is only one song on “Legendary” that I will purposefully listen to again.

The problem that I have with The Summer Set is that their appeal is completely aimed at girls between the ages of 12-15 which is completely lost on me and a large demographic of other music fans, the band has the talent to write better songs and appeal to a wider audience. Another problem I have is lead singer Brian Dales voice sounds auto-tuned, I have seen The Summer Set live and his voice does not need tuning by a computer or anything else. He has a good voice and what ever is done to his voice in production just ruins songs and at times makes it almost unbearable to listen to.

While the album title is “Legendary” the actual content does very little to live up to the promise we were given on the cover and comes up at “Below Average”.
