Review: The Strypes, The Leaf Liverpool 16/03/2013

Catching the second of their two sold-out Liverpool shows, I was keen to see what all the fuss and hype about the Irish quartet, The Strypes, was about.

Stood in a crowd full of a complete mix of people and ages from teenagers to older adults, it just shows how different the band are, with their rhythm and blues sound, its different and refreshing from all the other up and coming bands that are out there at the moment.

Right from the first moment they hit the stage with last single ‘Blue Collar Jane’ they had the crowd in the palm of their hands, for such young lads of just 17/18, they have so much confidence in their ability and it rubbed off on the crowd. Most bands their age not only crave the attention and success The Strypes find themselves having, but also completely shy away from the crowd when they are playing nowhere near home. From constantly speaking to the crowd, even throwing banter out at the crowd and taking it back, it just created a type of atmosphere you could be in all night.

Playing a mix of old tracks and some tracks that will feature on their debut album, expected to be out in autumn, you could hear some songs that you just know are going to take the band even further. Already signed to Mercury Records, their debut album is one of the most highly anticipated releases of this year.

Josh (lead guitar) has that slight arrogance that every band needs, he has the looks and is the one all the girls will take a shine to the most, even showing off his incredible guitar skills by playing his guitar on the floor during the bands hit ‘Rollin’ And Tumblin’, very impressive to say the least.

With huge names such as Dave Grohl, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher and even Elton John showing support for the band, yet their feet stuck so firmly on the ground, I cannot wait to see what the future holds for The Strypes. I have that feeling they’re a future Arena filling band.
