Review: Hudson Taylor- Osea EP

Opening for The Rolling Stones on the Main Stage in Hyde Park, slots at the likes of Longitude and Glastonbury and a recent début appearance on VEVO; a little more than an average summer for Dublin duo, Hudson Taylor…

Following the mass of success these guys have achieved, they are now almost at release date for what is possibly their most impressive and developed work to date- Osea EP.

It kicks off with lead track, ‘Care’, delivering the familiar Folk sound with a punchy Pop structure attached. Harmonies form the basis of the sound, laying on an upbeat melody which will inevitably spark a real catchy vibe. Accompanied by a fantastic performance-style music video, this track is definitely showing heroic signs… I mean, let’s face it, it didn’t get 100,000 views on VEVO within the first 24 hours for no reason…

Second Best’– the track which received its first radio play on BBC Radio 1 with Zane Lowe this week as his “Next Hype” artist- very quickly took the trophy for stand-out track of the EP. Grasping a real mature sound and almost playing a slight Beatles feel,  it seems to be the track to really cement Hudson Taylor as a band. Well-written lyrics belted out on another upbeat melody bound to run circles in your head after the first listen.

The transition from a previously dominant Folk sound to a more Pop foundation sort of relaxes a bit more for the second half of the EP. Following the more animated ‘Care’ and ‘Second Best’, the older, more familiar ‘Called On’  takes a vague exit back to Hudson Taylor’s original roots. Basing the intro and first verse very much on the vocals and gentle guitar that hides behind them, the Folk element shines through a little more. The power of the chorus remains focused on the acoustic sound which carried the atmosphere on previous EPs ‘Cinematic Lifestyle’ and ‘Battles’.

A wonderfully mastered EP which stays firm to Hudson Taylor’s previous works but polishes it off with a mature sound. Clearly developed along the brothers’ musical journey from the streets of Temple Bar, Dublin, to the Main Stage in Hyde Park, Osea EP is a perfect warm-up for the guys’ début album.

The best we’ve seen from Hudson Taylor.
