Review: Foals – O2 Academy, Liverpool – 04/03/2013

On the back of winning ‘Best Single’ at this years NME Awards for their last single ‘Inhaler’, Foals are currently on the road in support of new album ‘Holy Fire’, which is already tipped to be one of the best albums of 2013.

9pm strikes at a sold-out Liverpool Academy, the place goes dark and is brightened up by strobe lights and the opening of ‘Prelude’, Foals had hit the stage. The indie rockers played a mix of all three studio albums in their 15 song setlist, but it was heavy with the new album.

Songs played from dancefloor filling indie raving debut album ‘Antidotes’ got the crowd bouncing the most and after second track ‘Miami’, the band went into ‘Olympic Airways’. The crowd made themselves known and heard pretty clearly.

Foals played 5 songs from ‘Antidotes’, but there was surprisingly no space for the massive dancefloor anthem ‘Cassius’, somewhat to mine and the crowds disappointment.

New album ‘Holy Fire’ was well represented and brought out some of the songs of the night with ‘Milk & Black Spiders’ and latest single ‘My Number’ which has a real ‘Antidotes’ feel about it. Total Life Forever anthem ‘Spanish Sahara’ found the loudest voices in the crowd, the beautiful track going down a treat as always with the lively Liverpool crowd. The band took the rave levels off the scale by finishing the main part of the set with ‘Antidote’ classics ‘Red Socks Pugie’ and ‘Electric Bloom’

Foals returned to the stage to play a three song encore of ‘Moon’, ‘Inhaler’ and my favourite of the night ‘Two Steps Twice’.

With an incredible light show to go with their ever improving music, Foals are putting themselves on the music map as one of British music’s must see bands. Keeping the rock in indie rock with stage dives, immense love for their fans and completely rocking the venue to pieces, something you don’t see much of these days, personally, I cant see Foals playing small academy venues for much longer.

A must see band at this summers festivals.
