Review: Evora – Hurry Up Before I Die

Irish five-piece, Evora, from Howth in Dublin, recently rounded up every ounce of talent between them, and placed it perfectly into a wonderfully successful debut album- Hurry Up Before I Die.

An album consisting of both instrumental and vocal harmonies, fluxuating behind Alan Rickard’s almost echo-like voice, it has the absolute potential to be the pinnacle moment of their music career as a group. Upbeat, indie sounding track Close To You kickstarts the album, leaving you wanting more- good thing that’s only the first of 12, and you also get to hear an acoustic rendition of the same extraordinary track to close the album. Although the album could be described as an easy listen, it’s definitely a feel-good album in terms of many of the melodies it contains.

With stand out tracks consisting of Tell Me Your Name, which features the beautifully delicate voice of Shannon, Running Scared, and Started To Wish You Well, the track I’m drawn to most on the album is Fall Away. The complex, and excrutiatingly honest lyrics, which tone down the ending of this fascinating album, sang on flawless harmony and resting on fragile acousitc guitar chords could very well be that one track you continously have on repeat.

Although this is no “party” album, it provides a nice amount of upbeat melodies and a combination of slower, more sophisticated tracks. The one thing this album should be acclaimed for is the fantastic lyrical content.

The guys’  wonderful live performance on The Late Late Show in Ireland recently is also proof that they’re not laying around to be considered as a band who can just sell records; I suspect there will be massive turnouts to their live shows in the not so distant future- Up and coming musical prodigies alert!
