The Resurrection Of Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey has undoubtedly been Arsenal’s star player so far in their most exciting season in years.

Who would have ever thought he’d be the first name on a team sheet in a side consisting of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil?

The 23-year-old has been named Arsenal’s Player of the Month for August, September, October and November. It’s hard not to feel happy for his success. In fact, you’d have to be a Tottenham Hotspur fan to not be.

After all, the Welshman is a humble lad, which can’t be said about all “professionals” his age. Plus, he’s not had an easy few years.

It all began in February 2010 away at Stoke City when his leg was broken during a horrific challenge from Ryan Shawcross. He didn’t play again for Arsenal until March 2011 and for the following two seasons, was heavily criticised by many Gunners fans, with some even calling for Arsene Wenger to sell the midfielder.

But Ramsey’s struggling form wasn’t just due to physical tests such as regaining strength and fitness. It was also heavily because of mental issues on the midfielder’s mind.

In November 2011, Wales manager Gary Speed, an idol during Ramsey’s childhood, tragically committed suicide. Chris Coleman took responsibility of the national setup but a string of defeats led to failure to qualify for Euro 2012.

Coleman decided to alter a few things in a bid to improve for the future, and that included stripping Ramsey of the captain’s armband in November 2012. The honour was awarded to Ashley Williams who was enjoying fine form for Swansea City, which completely contrasted Ramsey’s fortunes.

It’s fair to say, Ramsey had suffered more setbacks at just 21 than most former players did in their whole careers. However, isn’t it funny how things change?

Fast-forward to present day and there has been a massive resurrection in Ramsey. He is scoring, assisting and tackling constantly. But what is the secret behind the transformation in an amazing tale?

Well, one key element has definitely been his work ethic. He was never a lacklustre individual to begin with, but this season, he has taken his energy levels up another gear to gain praise.

One of Ramsey’s best attributes has always been his composure when given the ball. Now though, he’s not only being given the ball but he’s also demanding it. He wants to be involved at every moment possible and is dictating Arsenal’s attacks.

Furthermore, he doesn’t just wait for the ball from teammates as he’s also prepared to find possession himself by barging and hustling opponents. It seems this season, Ramsey isn’t letting his innocent boy-band looks hold him back.

The Gunners also now have a more tenacious player who is more dynamic than just being a playmaker. Ramsey’s two goals at former club Cardiff City were examples of that. He began both attacks deep and finished them by busting his gut to make runs in the penalty box and score seconds later.

There’s no doubt, Aaron Ramsey is running the show at the moment and if his good form continues, he’ll be odds on for a place in the 2013/14 PFA Team of the Year.
