Online Games that Have Stood the Test of Time

The internet is turning 29 this year. Online gaming is an enormous part of internet use for many people, and it is also getting on in years. People were playing games online in the 1990s, which is now so long ago that people born in the year 2000 are starting university this year. Just like with films and books, these classic online games have stood the test of time.

World of Warcraft

This is a game that dominated people’s lives for much of the 2000s. Released in 2004, it was a smash hit that popularised the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) genre and sucked in a huge amount of cash for publisher Blizzard. Even 14 years after release, WoW is still a fun environment to roam around in, completing quests and carrying out huge raids on bosses.

Counter-Strike 1.6

This is the definitive version of the tense shooter. It originally started as a modification of the game Half-Life until the team that was developing it was bought by the Half-Life developers Valve, and Counter-Strike was released in 2000. You play on either a team of terrorists looking to plant a bomb or a team of counter-terrorists aiming to stop the terrorists. The game is available to buy on Steam, and there are still thousands of players on it.

Starcraft

This extremely well-made and balanced real-time strategy (RTS) game is about a war between the Terrans (humans exiled from Earth), the Zerg (an insectoid alien race) and the Protoss (humanoid aliens with advanced technology). There are Starcraft experts who have been playing the game since its release 20 years ago, so you should probably practice a little before you try playing online. The variety of the units and potential for strategy still guarantee a great experience, even with the release of a remake of the game in 2017.

Online casino games

No one ever gets bored of poker, roulette or slot machines. They are classics for a reason. Online casino games mean that you can play these games at the same standard as you would find them in a real casino without needing to actually go to one. You can play these games from the comfort of your own home while winning real money. Stakers has modern versions of many of the classics, and with offers often available, it is easy to see why consumers still love classic casino games.

Diablo II

This is an action role-playing game where you must fight your way through hoards of demonic enemies while constantly upgrading and finding better gear for your character. You can play the game in single player mode, but the ultimate way to play it is with some friends. This is still possible because developer Blizzard has been good at keeping the game updated. It released a patch as recently as two years ago.

Conclusion

There are loads of new online games releasing every single year, but there is a reason why some gamers keep going back to a few choice titles. They are classics of the highest quality that are still fun to play even today.
