The URL contains ‘weareyourmummy’ and the Facebook image was of a cartoon pair of breasts. Not a bad introduction to one of punks most furious offspring for years: Mummy. For too long the streets have been quietly tapping toes to indie and alt. rock infused bands. No shame in this, but sometimes what you actually need is something incredibly loud and stupidly ferocious in delivery. Slaves have taken the spotlight lately for their pop-spin the genre, opening the door for a whole new generation to become aware of this classic Brit-lead music style, whether they want to look into it’s origins or not.
The first track I heard of theirs was off their Milk EP, “Busy Doing Nothing”, which is quite the social commentary piece and rings rather too true for many of us working ‘the day job’ to fuel the real ‘me’ that comes out in the evenings (pay check pending). Not only did the lyrics resonate with me but the catchy song construction meant I was soon shouting along with the chorus, profanities and all. Alongside all the snarls and the shirtless sweat sharing, Mummy also have a sensitive side, with softer, indie swagger coming through in tracks like “Money Sponge” and “Bad For Good”.
In the penultimate House Of Savages before a hiatus kicks in, Mummy are sure fire fuel to kick start a true punk revival in the London music scene. They’re fun, young, lively and full of raw power. And that’s just the recordings! The live show is going to be something of an immersive treat and a great opportunity to catch them when they’re not playing with the heavyweights of the alternative scene across the capital. Perfect for your ‘f**k everything and just dance’ moments in life.
