Interview: Loveable Rogues – “All we want is to have a fanbase based on our music”

Having just released their début album ‘This and That’, Loveable Rogues are pushing through the recognition they highly deserve after massive anticipation amongst the fans.

We recently caught up with Té, one third of the group, to chat about their recent EP and the new album.

You guys recently released your EP ‘Honest’ – how have you found the reaction?

Really good actually. I think, with ‘Honest’, it was a while after ‘What A Night’, so it was kind of just giving the fans something that they’ve wanted for a long while. We weren’t really trying to have it in any chart position or anything like that but people really bought into it so it was massively humbling and just really refreshing to have something new out.

In comparison to that, what can people expect from the album?

I think in comparison to ‘Honest’, I think that EP was very much back to our roots. It was about just hearing us so just literally a guitar, ukulele, vocals; just an acoustic kind of EP for everyone to hear what we’re about and the songs and the harmonies and all that. And in terms of the album, it’s a lot more about what our sound actually is. And our sound is so many different things, so there is bits of acoustic, there’s also bits of reggae, there’s hints of Indie, and I think it’s an experimentation. That’s what people can expect from it, it’s really dynamic and just enjoyable.

Obviously the début album is such a massive step – how excited are you guys to finally get it out there?

You cannot imagine! We’ve been trying to do this for so many years now so to just get it out there and for people to hear what we’re about, because people only really have about four songs to base us on and there’s so much more to us than anybody has seen. So I can’t wait for them to hear it. It’s so exciting. Once you have a body of work out there is when you really an idea about your fanbase so I just can’t wait.

Yeah, it’s always the big step no matter what artist I’m chatting to!

Oh yeah absolutely because I don’t think you really understand an artist if they haven’t got an album out. I really mean that. ‘Cause when you hear a single and you like an artist, you hear an album and it’s a completely different thing ’cause it’s a body of work and it’s not necessarily made for anything, it’s about it being a story and a piece of work and I think you get a lot more of the artist’s story in an album.

Going back to your appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, which I don’t want to put too much emphasis on, but were you guys ever worried or just expectant of a certain stigma attaching to your name?

Absolutely, we were sceptical of a stigma, ’cause there’s always that when it comes to BGT and the whole aspect of any talent show like even X Factor, and that was why it was a bit of a tough decision for us to do it. But I think we were weighing up the pros and cons and I think actually those stigmas are attached when you allow yourself to accept them. We were adamant on doing our own songs on the show so we could only be portrayed as us, nobody could really change us, and I don’t think they really intended to to be honest. So, it worked really well for us, I know there are a lot of stigmas attached to other people, but we’re just happy with how it worked out.

Following on from the album, have you guys got any plans to do a stream of live shows or a tour of some sort?

We’ve got another tour coming up in November. We haven’t got dates as of yet but we will be putting them up very very soon. Another deluxe album and a lot of gigs over the Summer and Uni things. It’s just fun to be able to create work from the album. It’s exciting!

Are you expecting a different kind of reaction at shows once the album is released and people are more familiar with what’s on the set list maybe?

Well we’ve seen a different reaction kind of. We’ve been playing a few new songs to let people see what there is. There’s a bit of a different quality to our album, like some Indie led songs and some very Reggae led songs which I don’t think people see a lot in us, so when they hear it, the variety and age range of our audience kind of changes which is always exciting to see different groups of people appreciate different songs.

For the near future, what do you guys hope to achieve as a band, or what’s the big goal at the moment?

You know what, I think the biggest goal for us is just for people to hear us and get what we’re trying to do, as a household name I guess. I just want people to know who we are and know we do our thing and enjoy it. For us, all we want is to have a fanbase based on our music and not based on our position in charts or media or whatever, just to have a fanbase that enjoys our music and what we do. I’d love that.

Thank you very much for that interview Té, lovely talking to you.

Ahh no worries, my pleasure Wynona, thank you.
