Fun winter-themed names in horse racing

Winter is in the air and the season offers some great races such as Newbury’s Winter Carnival on the weekend of the 29th November, the Tingle Creek Christmas Festival at Sandown Park on December 6th, and to extend the Christmassy feeling further, the 32Red Christmas Festival begins on Boxing Day (26th December) at Kempton Park. In keeping with the seasonal vibe, we’ve found a bundle of winter-themed racehorse names to keep you entertained.

If you’re interested in who will be the likely winners for major upcoming horse races, UK national newspapers like the Mirror or Telegraph and online platforms like Oddschecker provide regular predictions for the races. You might even be able to find a wintery name worth a flutter.

The horses we will talk about here are listed on the British Horseracing Authority website and all have official ratings.

Winter Spice (IRE)

This eight-year-old grey gelding has had a mix of 36 hot and cold runs with two wins. However, the latest race he did not finish. His most recent win was on 23rd Sept 2014, directed by jockey Ryan Tate in Nottingham.

Christmas Night (GB)

This four-year-old chestnut gelding has run just under 30 races and has won three times. Christmas seemingly came early with a win on the 21st Sept at Catterick Bridge, ridden by Harrison Shaw.

Snowed In (IRE)

This grey gelding is a veteran when it comes to total runs so far. Running just under 100 races, this 10-year-old doesn’t let a bit of snow stop him from claiming eight wins. His last pole position was in January 2018 where he beat the rest at Catterick Bridge, led by Sean Quinlan.

Winter Holiday (GB)

A regular winter runner this year, this five-year-old bay filly comes with a seasonal bonus as the horse’s trainer is called Jamie Snowden. A perfect fit for the theme and the holiday season. The horse, ridden by Page Fuller, has run seven times, and in his last race in Uttoxeter came fourth out of nine.

Cold As Ice (FR)

This seven-year-old grey gelding doesn’t seem to have warmed up yet, as he’s had a total of six runs without a win. His jockey Charlie Deutsch will be hoping that Santa arrives quickly with the present of a win.

We particularly like one owner’s humour after he named his horse Snow Chance. Luckily, Snow Chance’s owner K Bennet had a great sense of humour as the 18-year-old horse recorded a total of zero wins after 16 races, with the last being in 2004. But the name’s a winner all the same.
