Having previously received support from M Magazine and The National, Scottish band The Violet Kind have released their innovative concept EP, OXTR.
Tackling the reality of rape culture, the EP champions those brave enough to speak out, whilst standing with those who don’t feel able to. With each track addressing a different issue regarding the subject, the same rhythm continues throughout, representing the repetition of gender-based violence within society.
Opening with ‘Speakeasy’, we’re introduced to the luscious, soaring vocals of front woman Katya Mansell. Accompanied by twinkling hooks, the track builds to a hauntingly poignant climax, reminding us of the sincerity of the subject matter.
Continuing with booming basslines and the twang of funk-fused guitars, ‘Good Behaviour’ is another example of the exquisite, shimmering grace of Mansell’s vocals. Oozing the subtle power of lyrics such as “you will save his life as she goes through hell”, the track directly confronts apologists and law-makers; making the affecting message of the EP explicit behind the guise of the catchiness of the track.
Whilst ‘Coffee and Contemplation’ flows with jangly hooks and a dreamy haze as it exudes its emotion-strewn power, final track ‘Science’ closes the EP with a simple, cathartic message of empowerment – “the truth cannot be altered / take time to practice self-love.”
A strikingly poignant collection, OXTR showcases both The Violet Kind’s skilled musicality and their insightful social awareness. Juxtaposing their delicate melodies with such a heavy, and necessary, subject matter, it’s a thought provoking – and very catchy – listen.
