EP Review – Peaness – Are You Sure?

Chester based Indie-poppers Peaness latest release comes in the form of a five track EP called “Are You Sure?” to be released on Alcopop! Records on 5 May 2017.

The EP with the lively song “Oh George” which, along with the rest of the EP, builds upon the sound and themes laid out on the bands previous release. For example, Peaness’ lyrics tend to revolve around things that they either love or are frustrated by. With lyrics “You lied to me and my family” and “You only think of your own”, this quite political song sets a tone for the rest of the EP.

The next two songs, “Seafoam Islands” and “Same place” are from Peaness’ previous AA side released on Odd Box Records in January. “Seafoam Islands” creates a slightly different vibe to that of “Oh George”. The song itself feels slightly grungier but still maintains the same sort of playfulness from the EP’s opener. “Same Place” carries the same hint of grunginess, however mainly through the more distinct bass line compared to the guitar section of the previous track.

The heavier bass line continues on the penultimate song “Skin Surfing”. The bass is counteracted by the playful and light hearted vocals from the ladies creates a wonderful sound that really commands attention. It’s no surprise that Peaness have had such success ranging from the BBC Introducing stations through to gaining fans such as Huw Stephens! The EP finishes with the track “Ugly Veg”. The music oozes with positive vibes which is contrasted at times by the lyrics to create a rather intriguing finish to the bands latest release. The overall feel of the track is created through Peaness’ want for a better world and care for the environment.

Summing the EP up is rather simple, it’s the kind of music that I can listen to again and again without feeling bored or after anything new. If an artist or band can achieve that, then I’d say they’re on to a winner!
