EP Review: Newtimers – EP One

Swedish duo Newtimers have released new EP, ‘EP One’, out now via Cosmos Music.

The EP is a blend of synth pop, RnB and 80s soul with the duo Andreas Britton Cavaco (vocals) and Tim Lundblad (drums, production), finally coming together as Newtimers after writing and recording music for many years under various guises for miscellaneous projects and collaborative ventures.

The single and first track on the EP ‘Best of Me’ is pretty much the quintessential summer pop track (complete with a holiday romance themed music video) and allows Newtimers to show us their affinity for a catchy chorus and a really nice vocal melody. Unfortunately the track also suffers from a rather dodgey key change and just when you think the drop is really about to kick the song finishes leaving a bit of a “oh, thought that was going somewhere” sort of feeling. It’s disappointing because you feel like the band have done the hard part by coming up with some great ideas, but the song just doesn’t kick on.

The rest of the EP is rounded out by the RnB enfused ‘Flower On The Moon’ which has some fantastic 80’s inspired synth stabs and as is to be expected from this band, another earworm of a chorus, and their biggest song to date ‘Pefect 10’ which isn’t far off hitting an impressive 50k listens on Soundcloud. There are also two remixes of ‘Best Of Me’ by Monsiour Adi and Sailor & I which are two really great takes on the original that add a completely different flavour to the EP. A welcome variation.

All in all I think that if you want a great summer pop record then you can’t go wrong with EP One, but it does feel like it doesn’t reach quite as far as initially promises. Falling somewhere closer to the predrinks soundtrack than the anthem of the summer.
