Following the twinkling splendour of her debut Same Stuff, Bristol-based artist Emily Magpie has returned to grace our ears with a brand new EP – The Witching Hour. Inspired by a trip to South America, and reflecting on the empowering feeling of freedom that comes when travelling, it offers an array of haunting electro-folk creations.
Title track and EP opener ‘The Witching Hour’ draws you in instantly, and is the perfect introduction to the collection. Taking influence from a book about the witch trials, it fuses together whirring electronic sounds with delicate, majestic melodies, leaving you spellbound on first listen.
And you’ll remain hooked as the rich musicality of ‘Leave It To Fate’ takes hold. Flowing with charming ukulele melodies, it showcases Magpie’s resonant celestial vocals as a sweeping magical aura sweeps over you.
Another mystical soundscape, ‘Angel Face’ is angelic as the title would suggest. Interweaving delicate, folk-inspired melodies with the dark power of throbbing beats, it’s an eerily captivating offering.
EP closer ‘When We Find It’ soars with an other-worldly grandeur, oozing a subtle power as a lilting, effervescent grace flows alongside whirring electronic sounds. The perfectly pretty end to a pretty impressive collection of tracks.
With her sophomore offering, Emily Magpie has thus proven her skill in melding together an eclectic array of sounds to create something truly bewitching.
