EP Review: Chanele McGuinness – Already Gone

Set for release on July 31st, the debut EP from Chanele McGuinness is an intricately gentle, almost mystical flow of honest tracks.

The EP opens on the captivating, vocally prominent ‘O Little Dove’, standing as a smooth introduction which carries seamlessly into title track ‘Already Gone’. The most powerful number on the five track EP, ‘Already Gone’ encapsulates relatable lyrics of longing and overcoming, which thrive on the captivating vocals of the Donegal songstress.

Secrets’ acts as an interlude, sweetened by a contented ukulele riff matching the joyful lyrics of “hush hush, you’re my secret and I’ll keep you”.

The most lyrically poignant and instrumentally emotive track on the EP, ‘Terrfied’ fires out heartfelt songwriting, the addition of strings and overriding keys. Chanele transports everything and everyone to a whole other place with the string depth towards the end of the chorus as she pleads “I’m scared of having nowhere left to hide, I’m terrified”.

A crowd favourite at live shows, ‘Ghost’ concludes the EP. Topped with innocence and a subtle melody, ‘Ghost’ is the story-telling track of the record, rounding up each chapter with “Remember, everybody’s just a body, with a ghost inside”.

‘Already Gone’ is an impeccable debut EP from Donegal singer/songwriter, Chanele McGuinness. Having wow’ed crowds at many gigs over past months, including support slots for Natalie Prass and Orla Gartland, this EP proves Chanele can bring what she’s got on stage into the studio for an equally impressive finish. We hope to see an album in the future!
