Aberdeen’s The Deportees recently released their latest album ‘The Birth of Industry’ and although it may not be ground breaking, its definitely worth a listen if you’re a fan of the likes of Idlewild or The Waterboys.
Kicking off with ‘This Man’ we are introduced to the sounds of a sea breeze and a country twang that wouldn’t seem out of place in an old western film. Lead singer Diarmaid O’Gallagher‘s soft, rich vocal add a more folk feel to the track while the lead guitar brings in a more indie-rock vibe. Something for everyone really.
Following on from that is the previously released ‘A Single Truth’ and possibly one of the strongest tracks on the album in our humble opinion. The melody is instantly catchy, harmonies are on point and that twangy guitar solo really is something else. Their second single released from the album, ‘I Lost Her to the Sea’ follows in a similar vein, with an infectious chorus that you’ll be humming along to for days.
Of course there are slower tracks on the album as well. ‘North’ oozes with ethereal harmonies throughout, ‘The Ancient’ could easily be mistaken for a traditional folk ditty in parts and even the interlude seems to stand on its own two feet effortlessly. Perhaps making it a shame there isn’t a bit more to it.
Overall, this is a very promising debut album from The Deportees. Of course there is still room to grow but they’re certainly on the right track. If americana influenced Scottish folk with a hint of indie is your bag then ‘The Birth of Industry’ is definitely worth getting your teeth into.
