We’ve got something a little different for you today. Singer-songwriter Luke De-Sciscio has just released his eclectic new album ‘The Banquet’ via AntiFragile Music; an album that seems to miraculously allow you to travel back in time, whilst also still feeling extremely relevant…
If you’re familiar with Luke’s earlier work, you’ll sense there’s quite a shift in musicality when it comes to ‘The Banquet’. Luke is graduating from his ‘Folk Boy’ era and entering a new phase of his journey; unafraid to break formula and push the frontiers of his own creativity. This album instead focusses on chamber-pop, baroque-pop and even freak-folk sensibilities at times. The album instantly takes you back to what feels like the medieval times with its use of traditional instrumentation and poetic lyricism throughout. Luke’s undeniably impressive vibrato is at the forefront throughout, bringing a real sense of passion and power to the fold. State out tracks include ‘In A Moment Just Like This One’, ‘Who Said Identity Crisis’ and ‘Happy To be Here (I might die tomorrow)’.
As you can probably tell from the slightly morbid song titles, there is a very emotive side story to this album that also deserves your attention. Luke elaborates, “it’s a love album. Not some surface level, Hollywood romance two-dimensional, veneer type thing, but a searing look into the dark, where the monsters of our past enact ramifications in our present. It’s an invitation to break bread with those monsters and to take full responsibility for them, to forgive them and accept them. To rise above them, not without them, but on account of them. I’m not ashamed of the scars – of what we endured at one another’s hands – I’m thankful”.
Overall an extremely well executed album that is sonically impressive but amy also not be everyone’s cup of tea.
